John with his 1933 Rudge-Whitworth 500cc TT Replica
I would like to say a few words about John, who I would like to
think was a friend. I can't honestly say how we met, but I was aware that
he had work at 'Born's of Exeter' a motorcycle shop that I
had visited and can remember seeing his Rudge combo parked up out back.
John being a watchmaker in a previous life, serviced and repaired
three Smiths speedo's and one rev counter of mine.
Apart from other work, he also very kindly took on the total engine rebuild
'Grace' my 52' BSA ZB32 Special, from a large pile of bits.
He commented with a smile on his face about the seriously lightened
flywheels (full of holes!). John went the extra mile
and I have the bike that you all know, one with spirit and long legs that
gives me so much fun.
I had the pleasure of visiting John recently to specifically
thank him again for his work on producing such a fine engine for me.
John was also as you all know the 'Bible' on Rudge-Whitworth
motorcycles, his knowledge and passion
for this mark of motorcycle was unprecedented.
I can remember seeing John start his 33' TT Rep by just correctly
setting it up, then by spinning the rear wheel!!
He will be missed by myself, many Rudge-Whitworth enthusiasts
and club members as he is "irreplaceable"
gone but not forgotten.
